Free Book Alert: Don't Ask, Don't Tell-T.R. Stoddard

Free Book Alert!

Author Bio:

T.R. Stoddard is the author of her own wild imagination. Psychological thrillers and unique young adult fiction are her forte, but she hopes to one day make a contribution to each major genre. Stoddard has two novels and one short story currently in circulation, and spends her free time creating more. She lives in Orlando, Fl with her boyfriend and their rescue dog Harry PAWter.

Synopsis:

Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell is an anti-gay policy sweeping the Bible Belt portion of the nation. Freshman journalism student Rachael Ainsley goes undercover as a high school senior named Cassie Rae for a tell-all exposé, hoping to drastically alter the Gay Rights Movement. She instantly befriends the gayest boy in school. Imagine his surprise when he finds out who she really is. Can she stick to her deadline, or will she be discovered before she has a chance to change the lives of the students attending Mooreville High?

Reviews:

“T.R. Stoddard has done it again! Don't Ask, Don't Tell takes you right back to high school, to a life of cliques, horrible teachers, and best friends. In a prose that makes you feel as if you're one of the kids sitting in Reformation Hall, you're catapulted through a busy few weeks of Rachael Ainsley's life as she goes undercover at a high school where a Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy is in the works and where she deems it her job to break the story to get her journalism career off with a bang. What she doesn't realize is that she will befriend some of the best people possible, yet they're also the ones the school administration is trying to abandon. Yet again a page-turning read, you will be sucked in and you seriously will not want the ride to end.”
 – EffinNikktastic (Amazon)

“College freshman Rachel goes undercover posing as "Cassie" to do a story on a heinous "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy at a high school in Bible Belt, USA. What she finds is a school where you are "punished" for being, looking
Or acting in a "gay" manner. This was a great book, full of harsh reality. was a very emotional read for me, having so many gay friends and family members, and knowing this kind of hatred really does exiist. I loved the ending, and I commend Ms. Stoddard for writing this book!!!”
– Tonya (Amazon)

“As the title might suggest, this book tackles the issue of gay rights in the school system. The main character is a journalism student who decides to infiltrate a local high school so she can find out more about this policy. The program itself is meant to punish and rehabilitate wayward students with homosexual tendencies, speech, appearance, or any other traits that make the people around them uncomfortable. Through the course of her attendance she meets several young people who are all unique in their own way. Those who make it to Reformation Hall are not all gay and many are simply supporters of equal rights.

I beta read this book a couple of months ago and I was impressed with how the author respectfully portrayed members of the LGBTQ community and reinforced the importance of unity and strength in numbers. Each student in Reformation Hall is incredibly unique and memorable but the shining star for me was Zane but I was also a fan of the open-minded Barbie doll relationships his younger sister had later on in the story. There are several sweet moments intertwined with the darker issues of bullying and abuse gay and lesbian students currently face and it is done very well.”
– Jennifer J Albert (Amazon)

“T.R. Stoddard's latest novel, "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" is an intriguing story about gay rights, something that is close to my heart for obvious reasons.

The novel starts off with college freshman Rachael Ainsley, trying to find that perfect story every journalism major needs to further his or her career.

What she finds is all that, and more, when she discovers the absurd "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy being implemented at a high school in the Bible Belt, USA. The "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy is a new way of "controlling" homosexuality, by issuing warnings and reprimands for any student who even "acts" gay, or shows predilection for the same sex in any way.

Rachel [undercover name Cassie] infiltrates the school, makes some great friends along the way, and learns that standing up for yourself is better than keeping quiet.

Overall, a wonderful read that deals with all of the truths, lies, and ludicrous consequences of being gay in present-day America.”
– Jason (Amazon)

“For a second book, I'd say T.R Stoddard hit this one out of the park. At the very beginning of this novel you find yourself following college freshman Rachel Ainsley to Mooreville High School where she will be under the alias Cassie Rae to find out information about the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy that had been enforced. It starts out as just a journalism project for Rachel but you slowly learn that it turns into so much more. Every chapter I found myself becoming engrossed in the relationships that were forming throughout the story. From best friends to boyfriends you'll want to root for these outcasts to rise above the harmful policy. There are many twists and turns throughout that leave you wanting to know more. The author really hit some important issues in the LGBTQ community and sends the messages that one person really can change it all with enough support and ambition. There are many times where I found myself smiling, laughing or crying, it takes you on a real emotional roller coaster that you will want to ride out until the end. I'd highly recommend this book to anybody, it's a quick read with a powerful message.” –Ginny (Amazon)

“I Loved Don't Ask Don't Tell by T.R. Stoddard. I believe Ms. Stoddard handled the LGBT issues with much class and dignity. I was very impressed with the writing style and overall AWESOMENESS of this book. I have read alot of LGBT books before and was very pleased with this one. It covers acceptance by friends, bullying, homophobia, family acceptance and/or rejection and all other things that are important in the LGBT community. I would definitely recommend this book to everyone! Don't pass up this great read!” –Faye (Amazon)

“High School is hard enough when you have to face the ridicule of other students but, when the faculty is dead set against you, it is even worse. Rachael Ainsley, a college student, is looking for the story that will open doors for her. When she goes undercover at a high school to investigate a heinous social policy, she opens up the eyes of the public.

The High School's incredibly prejudiced Don't Ask, Don't Tell Policy is taken to extremes by the faculty. Landing anyone with "gay tendencies" and their sympathizers in a place called Reformation Hall. When Rachel finds herself among those who are banished from the regular school, she has the opportunity to meet the kids there and her mission to write a story, turns into a mission to change the world.

Taking a step from her usual dark passage, T.R. Stoddard has set out to enlighten the world with Don't Ask, Don't Tell. Zane and Vinnie's journey through a life other's don't always understand will break your heart and Rachael's will to help those around her will leave you in awe. I salute Ms. Stoddard for telling a story of substance that will have your eyes glued to every page.” -Catherine (Amazon)

“This is a story about a young woman reporter who goes undercover at a high school where there have been rumors that the principal has been encouraging students to bully and harass gays and other students who are different. She finds out the rumors are true and she exposes the whole thing to the public. This is a bittersweet tale that will keep you reading until the very last page.” –Patricia N (Amazon)

Ancient Blood Blog Tour: Brian McKinley

Ancient Blood:
A Novel of the Hegemony

By  Brian Patrick McKinley

Avery Doyle loves vampires; he’s read every novel, seen all the movies, and researched the folklore.  When his first one-night-stand, Caroline, turns out to be a true vampire on the run, he jumps at the chance to leave his ordinary life and join her as a “child of the night.”  The honeymoon ends, however, when Caroline’s brutal Creator Sebastian enslaves them on his island estate and Avery must confront the dehumanizing reality behind his dreams.
In order to survive, Caroline and Avery take their place as servants in Sebastian’s household during a gathering of the most powerful vampires on Earth, the Hegemony, and soon find themselves involved in the myriad intrigues and deceptions that form the night-to-night existence of The Order.
A society of wealth, power, and inhuman decadence whose existence is protected by human complicity and disbelief, The Order is the immortal aristocracy hidden behind the giant corporations and political leaders of the world. Sebastian, however, has a plan that will change The Order forever and shatter human civilization.
To avoid this terrible fate, Avery and Caroline will not only have to defy the most powerful creatures on Earth, but also confront the darkest aspects of themselves. For in the world of the Hegemony, even victory may cost them their souls . . .
A fast-paced thriller that both re-imagines and pays tribute to the traditional vampire, Ancient Blood is a story of love, ambition, sacrifice, and betrayal that is frighteningly human.

About the Author
Brian is a lifelong vampire fan from New Jersey and has written four screenplays, a stage play which won a state-wide contest and was produced by a NJ community theater, and numerous short stories which have been published online in various magazines.

Excerpt:

She gave me the earring and, as delicately as I could, I pierced one of the smaller arteries at the bottom of her neck. I handed the earring back to her and bent to drink. While I did, she punctured my neck in the same way and put her lips to the wound. This is probably the one major advantage a starving Vampyr has over a starving human, this mutual-cannibalism we can perform. I guess it’s a little like having sex while freezing just to generate bodily warmth, but among Vampyrs, this is considered the purest form of lovemaking. It didn’t have the climactic intensity of sex, but it was a warmer plateau, like riding that pre-orgasmic moment forever. Or, for those of a more gastronomic bent, imagine eating the best chocolate sundae you ever had and never reaching the bottom of the dish and never losing your appetite for it. It made me feel close to her in a way that was impossible with any other form of verbal or physical expression. At that moment, we were literally one being, one system circulating its life between our separate halves. We fed and kissed and comforted each other for the rest of the night. When sunrise came, we fell into our daytime hibernation coma holding each other.

Author Interview: Brian McKinley

Welcome Brian McKinley to Author Fever.
He is on the first leg of his Ancient Blood Blog tour.

What do you do when you aren’t writing?

I read a lot; I also watch Game of Thrones, Dexter, Boardwalk Empire, Walking Dead, Being Human, and True Blood. I spend way too much time on Facebook!

If you had to choose an all-time favorite book, what would it be?

Red Dragon by Thomas Harris.

What inspired you to start writing?

I’ve been writing ever since I was old enough to put words together. I think I’ve always had a desire to tell stories for others to enjoy. I used to write little stories to show my grandparents, then later I would show friends and join school newspapers to publish my stories there. I’ve never really had a doubt about what I wanted to do.

What is your favorite genre to write?

My favorite genre now is paranormal, but I stared off writing sci-fi, so there’s always that lurking in the back of my head.

Do you have a set writing schedule, or do you do it when the fancy strikes.
Unfortunately, I don’t write as often as I should. I try to set a schedule, but then I’ll miss a day or two and shoot the whole thing down. Sometimes, I can force myself to work and actually get stuff done, but mostly I’d say it’s when the fancy strikes.

Do you outline or write as you go (describe your writing process)?

Yes, I’m a compulsive outliner. I feel that I’m better with characters, description, and dialogue than with plot, so I will outline a project as thoroughly as possible in order to satisfy myself that the plot and pacing are as strong as I can make them. If I try to pants it, I just sit and stare at the screen because I’m too scared to write anything. I need a roadmap before I feel ready to start. Once I begin, however, I have no problem deviating from the outline because I always know where I’m trying to get back to.

What inspires you?

I’d say that all kinds of things inspire me, but the main things are history and other people’s stories. Reading other authors’ work and watching TV and movies makes me want to create my own stories. I sometimes imagine paths that a show or movie didn’t take and sometimes that will inspire me to create a similar situation in my own work. As for history, I love learning about how events happened and odd little trivia, so sometimes a character (or a scene) will generate because I want to use something I learned about a specific time period (vampires are great vehicles for bringing history to life).

Are the people in your life supportive of your writing?

Some are, but mostly the writers I meet and exchange critiques with. Sadly, my family aren’t big readers, so while they wish me luck, they don’t really get how important writing is to me.

Is music a part of your writing process?

Yes! I always try to listen to music while I write if I can and often have different playlists for different stories or characters.

Share with us a dream cast of your novel.

Well, I have this posted up on my website complete with pictures. www.brianpatrickmckinley.webs.com

Tell us about your current work in progress.

I just finished a novel set in the same universe as ANCIENT BLOOD about a gangster in the 1930s who becomes a vampire and sets out to take over New York. It’s quite a ride! My next project, that I’m outlining now, is about a pack of Native American werewolves who hunt the vampires of The Order.
Where can our readers find more about you? [Add bios, links, anything else you’d like to.]
I’m on Facebook at brianmckinley13 and my official website is www.brianpatrickmckinley.webs.com.

Extras:
If you could have one super power, what would it be and why?

Mind control like Professor X. That would be the ultimate ability because there’s almost nothing you couldn’t get done if you can literally change people’s minds. Fix the government, become rich, solve world hunger, and open people’s minds socially—it’s all possible!

Is the glass half-empty or half-full?

Technically, the glass is always half-full because the other half is air.

If money were no option, where would you live?

Not sure. I’d probably have multiple houses in different places.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

A writer or a movie star.

What is your all-time favorite movie?

That’s hard to say because I love movies, different movies for different reasons. I’ll give a few categorical answers. Vampire movie: Interview with the Vampire, thriller: Silence of the Lambs, comedy: Young Frankenstein, superhero/comic book: The Dark Knight, drama: Goodfellas, fantasy: The Princess Bride.

If you could have a dinner party with five people [living or dead], who would you choose and why?

Stephen King, Joss Whedon, Christopher Walken, Sir Anthony Hopkins, and Brent Spiner. Just because they’re all heroes of mine and people I would love to meet.

Author Interview: Jasmin Lily Duncan

Welcome Jasmin Duncan to Author Fever!

Today’s interview is a special one. I know many authors spend a life-time making their dreams come true. This young lady has accomplished so much at the young age of 11. Jasmin has her first book out, The Unicorn Legacy under Karabeth Publishing in the UK. She isn’t just good for her age, she is good for any age.

What do you do when you aren’t writing?

I like to write songs – wait, does that count as writing? I also like to sing and ride my bike and draw manga.

If you had to choose an all-time favorite book, what would it be?

Wow, that's a really tricky question... I'm not quite sure but it would probably be Maggie Stiefvater's Shiver series – she is an amazing author and I love her descriptions of the characters and also the plot twists.

What is your favorite genre to write?

I like writing fantasy. Fantasy is great, so is supernatural, because you can do anything in your fantasy world, say anything, be anything, and you can create new creatures too, and I think that's just fascinating. It's just really fun in general.

Do you have a set writing schedule, or do you do it when the fancy strikes?

I write when I have time. Sometimes I have no inspiration, but usually I write when my creative juices are flowing (is it just me or does that expression sound a bit gross? Creative juices, yuck.) which is basically before school, at breaktime and lunchtime, and after school. It's a bit annoying still being at school while writing books, because when I have a good idea in the middle of lessons, I can't hurry over to a computer and type up a few paragraphs, I just have to try and remember my idea.

Are the people in your life supportive of your writing?

Yes, definitely. My parents and my big sister are really happy for me, but my nephew sometimes gets a bit irritated when he wants me to play horsey with him but I am absorbed in my writing. He's only little, bless.

Is music a part of your writing process?

Definitely. I like to listen to a wide range of music, like J-pop, K-pop, normal pop, rock, dubstep, house, nightcore etc. but my favourite would have to be electro-pop, like the Japanese electro-pop girl band, Perfume.

If you could have one super power, what would it be and why?

I would be able to teleport. That would be awesome.

Is the glass half-empty or half-full?

Half-full. I like to look on the bright side of things.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I used to want to be lots of things. I wanted to be an author, an artist, a vet and a singer – doesn't every young girl?

What is your all-time favorite movie?

The Lion King wins hands-down. I've loved that movie since I first watched it as a small child and I think it's a heartwarming, sweet film (and it makes me cry every time!)

If you could have a dinner party with five people [living or dead], who would you choose and why?

Oh, wow! I think I would choose Ke$ha, because she would really get the party started, Britt Nicole, because her songs are uplifting and positive, Mother Teresa, because she was an amazing person, Anne Frank, because I think she was such a nice girl who had her life taken unfairly, and last but not least, Miranda Hart, because she is hilarious.

Author Interview: Crystal Smith-Connelly

Welcome Crystal Smith to Author Fever!

Hello Crystal, tell our readers a little bit about yourself.

I’m a playwright from Charleston, SC who has written more than fifty plays, some of which have been performed in New York, Los Angeles, Maryland, and France. I’m the author of two play anthologies-For I Am Zeus: A Collection of Plays About Greek Mythology and Never Trust an Angel and Other Plays-and Trey Parker and Matt Stone, Conan O’Brien, Sarah Silverman, and Tina Fey are some of the people who influence me.  I have a husband (Kyle), a dog (Layla), and two hamsters (Bret and Jemaine), and I’m obsessed with Arrested Development.

What do you do when you aren’t writing?

Read, watch TV and movies, listen to music and stand-up comedy CDs, go to stand-up comedy shows

If you had to choose an all-time favorite book, what would it be?

Naked Pictures of Famous People by Jon Stewart…it’s hilarious, and I’ve read it multiple times.

What inspired you to start writing?

I don’t remember…I’ve loved writing for as long as I can remember.  As for playwriting though, I took an Arthurian Legends class my senior year of high school, and we decided to write and perform a play at the end of the semester; it was the first time I’d tried playwriting, and I really liked it, so I took playwriting classes in college and kept writing plays long after I graduated.

What is your favorite genre to write?

Comedy…I want to spend my life making people laugh, and all the people who inspire me are very funny.

Do you have a set writing schedule, or do you do it when the fancy strikes.

I just do it when an idea hits me.

Do you outline or write as you go (describe your writing process)?

Most of my plays are pretty short (ten to twenty minutes), so I don’t really need an outline…I just start writing and see where it takes me.

Do you have a certain vice that helps you write?

Not really…but I have noticed that sometimes after I see a stand-up comic or a good play, I’ll end up starting a new play the next day.

Describe your muse.

When I write my Zeus plays, Will Ferrell is my muse…I imagine him in the part, and that makes it even more fun to write.

What inspires you?

Good comedy

Are the people in your life supportive of your writing?

Yes, most of them have bought my book, and my husband (my then-boyfriend) traveled with me to Los Angeles a few years ago to see my play “Godly Acres”…and he didn’t mind sitting through it twice!

Is music a part of your writing process?

Not really…I love music, but I’m usually in front of the TV when I’m writing.

Tell us about your current work in progress.

I’m currently proofreading my first proof of Never Trust an Angel and Other Plays…it should be out sometime in March.

You can find more about Crystal here:

Cannibal!: The Musical

Author Interview: Jessica Jayne

Welcome Jessica Jayne to Author Fever!

Hello Jessica, tell our readers a little bit about yourself.

Jessica Jayne
I am a born and raised small town Ohio girl.  I moved to the Sunshine State after graduating from college so that I could enjoy the beaches and sixty degree winters!  J
I love to travel and travel often!  I am a huge sports fan, especially college football and the Ohio State Buckeyes!  I am wine-making (and wine-tasting) aficionado.  I love all music and sunsets at the beach!
In this journey of life, I married a wonderful man and had three beautiful (and sometimes crazy) children.

What do you do when you aren’t writing?

That’s a loaded question.  I have three children six years old and under, so I spend a great deal of time (including some of my writing time) being a mommy!  We play a lot of board games like Candyland or Sorry.  We read a lot of books.  Thankfully, our children are as caught up in storytelling as I am.  We plant and tend to our vegetable garden… the kids plant them from seed, so they love to see them grow.  We go to the beach!  To be honest, being a mom is the best job I’ve ever been given.  It’s exhausting on some days, but always rewarding.
Other than my motherly and wifely duties (and this other thing I call a full-time job), I spend time running and working out.  Nothing relieves stress better than pounding the pavement with some good music on your ipod.  I also enjoy watching movies, hanging with my girlfriends and doing yoga.

What inspired you to start writing?

I started writing when I was child.  I used to write short stories and illustrate them myself.  I will admit… I’m not much of an illustrator.
When I was a sophomore in high school, I was asked by a teacher to join a senior level creative writing course.  That is when I truly fell in love with fiction writing!  I loved the challenge of creating a believable story and characters.  I loved the idea of being able to evoke emotions and feelings from readers through a story.

What is your favorite genre to write?

My favorite genre to write (and read) is romance, particularly erotic romance.  As a passionate person, it is fun to create two individuals that go through the ups and downs of a relationship.  We’ve all been there!  We all come with baggage.  But what really matters in life is the memories we make with the people we love, so I love creating stories that are moving and arousing.

Do you have a set writing schedule, or do you do it when the fancy strikes.

I try to force myself to sit down and write for at least an hour on any given day.  Some days, that may turn into hours of writing.  On other days, that may be an hour and I’m done.

Do you outline or write as you go (describe your writing process)?

I know this is a highly debated issue.  In the writing courses I’ve taken, it is usually recommended to outline your story and create character profiles.  To be honest, my writing style makes no sense for a lot of people.  It usually starts with the characters and a scene that have been bouncing around in my head.  I sit down and write the scene… then I create the story around it.  Sometimes the original scene changes or evolves with the rest of the story, but it is that scene that started it all.  Of course, I have notebooks with character descriptions, settings and potential scenes, but those do not usually develop fully until I write that first scene.

Do you have a certain vice that helps you write?

A nice glass of wine or a good beer does make writing steamy sex scenes a little easier.  When your inhibition levels are down, anything is possible…literally!

What inspires you?

I’m inspired by life.  I am a sexual assault survivor, so I had a lot of things to work through over the years.  During that process, I’ve met tons of people, who suffered through a variety of ordeals in their lives and have walked out of the darkness stronger and better people.  It is hard not to be inspired by the people around you!

Are the people in your life supportive of your writing?

Very much so.  My husband takes the kids out, so that I can have some quiet time.  When I got my first novella published, he and the kids made a big deal out of it by buying me flowers and making me a celebratory dinner.
The rest of my family buys my books and is always eager to talk about the characters and storylines.

Is music a part of your writing process?

Very much so.  For instance, my latest WIP involves a Florida cowboy, so I’ve had to dig into my country music playlist to get inspired to write some scenes.

Tell us about your current work in progress.

I just signed a contract with Evernight Publishing for my next book.  It is entitled In Flames.  We are hopeful for a May release, but we have not yet started the editing phase, so it’s hard to say. The book blurb for In Flames is below:
Gracelyn Riley married a firefighter.  She knew that came with risks.  But she never imagined herself widowed in her early thirties with two children to care for on her own.
As a fireman, Matt Riley was at the scene when his brother, Chad, was killed.  He suffered greatly from survivor’s guilt and depression after the accident.
The last year has been difficult for both Gracelyn and Matt.  They’ve relied on each other to get through the tough times.  With the anniversary of Chad’s death upon them, Gracelyn and Matt once again turn to each other for comfort and support.  They find it in each other’s arms (and bed).  Will their desire for each other consume them?  Can they overcome the guilt and scrutiny to find love again…together?

Where can our readers find more about you?

Extras:
If you could have one super power, what would it be and why?

To fly.  I’ve been skydiving several times and there is nothing quite like it… the freedom you feel as you soar over everything.  To be able to do that whenever you wanted would be really cool.  But I think I’d only fly in my Batgirl costume because I always fantasized I’d make a good Batgirl!  J

Is the glass half-empty or half-full?

I’m a half-full kind of girl!  And I’m always looking for a place to fill it up.

If money were no option, where would you live?

Italy!  I’m a romance writer and a lover of wine!  Where else could I possibly go?!

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I think I changed my mind on a weekly basis.  A teacher.  An astronaut.  A dancer.  An actress.  A comedienne.  A counselor.  A lawyer.  A doctor.  A vet.  But in the back of my head always a writer!

What is your all-time favorite movie?

All time favorite movie would be Grease, the original.  In college and after, my best friend and I would rent all these horror movies or suspense movies and get all jacked up on adrenaline.  The only thing that would calm us down was a little Danny Zuko, Sandy Olsson and some Grease Lightning!
